Southy: Opening vid

Southy: opening pics

The "broken hip" photo op.....Keiran grinding.....
Chaos in the wet.....

South Park: Grand Opening

After a bit of a stuttering start with technical problems and a lack of petrol for generators we eventually got the opening jam underway. We had the deputy mayor and a host of councillors show for the official ribbon cutting, and the mayor was even persuaded to get on a skateboard for the photos.

Around 100 riders took part during the day, with a good contingent of in-liners from Manc, and some great sponsored riders venturing from Bristol. The park looked great and was riding fab. The comps got underway then unfortunately the rain set in about 2pm and threw the jam in to disarray. It was looking a bit of a washout and a load of riders left, but it began to dry.

Meanwhile 'H' and old skool flat land BMXer showed and amazed the young guns with some sweet chilled flat tricks, including some sick backward nose manuals. A quick brushing helped the park dry and by 4 we were all on again. The BMXers sessed the bowl with the skaters and inliners on the street. H judged the bikes and called the three winners who received prizes from wheelscape. The skaters couldnt get there arses together to call the winners in the skate comp, but after some chaos the visiting sponsored riders began to get the feel for the park and they started to show what the park is capable of. They were starting to sweetly grind the central block and the bank to kerb. Then the sun came out and we were treated to a great 2 hour session of quality riding on the street and the bowl. The visiting riders all really rated the park, with sections for every one.

Big thanks to wheelscape for building the thing, and the prizes, plus thanks to Sam and Gav for tunes all day. Also thanks Leo for comparing and also Josh and the bikers who showed before the rain. Also thanks to all the local riders who are really starting to rip the place to shreds. Good on yer. And finally biggest thanks to Marianne H from Cheshire East, who without, none of this would have ever happended.

South Park: Opening Jam

Well if the weather stays dry it should be a wicked afternoon in Southy this weekend! Things kick off a little earlier than planned at around 12ish with the mayor "officially opening" the park with some scissors and a ribbon at 1pm. After that there will be demos from TOP UK skaters Dan Wileman, Korahn Gayle, Dave Snaddon, Rob Smith, Flynn Trotman and Nicky Howells, not to mention the local riders and Manchester riders who will be there. Leo will be on hand with a group to showcase inline and there is a rumour of a very special BMX guest rider. There will be tuneage all afternoon, and comps running from 1pm onwards. Loads of prizes and a prody throw at the end. Quality!

Flock 2: Goes off!

Flock 2, Macclesfield's very own skate jam, was held on Sunday and we had a great turnout of around 80skaters and a similar number of folk watching the comps. Luckily the weather just about held out, with only a short interruption due to drizzle in the seniors ramp qualification rounds.

The U16 ramp comp was less busy this year with only 10 entrants, and in a 25 min final, Elliot took top honours and a NOTE deck closely followed by Harry. Both were riding very smoothly, and indeed there were some great younger riders who will be contenders in the years to come. Well done all.

The Seniors saw 13 riders enter with the hope of picking up a cash prize. In the first qualifier, John Bell, Keiran Hughes, and Matt Grant went through to the final and were joined by Dave Monaghan, Riess (the only U16 brave enough to go with the Seniors - so well done him!) and Mouse. The final did not disappoint. With the ramp extension on to liven things up a bit, all the guys were throwing themselves at it, Kieran managed a nose pick, Matt G a rock fakie and a series of one foots, but John Bell upstaged them both with a 5 O pivot, a feeble stall and a front rock. On the tranny, Matt G pulled a blunt flip and John Bell some frontside flips. After 30mins the judges called it, with John Bell taking the top spot and £50 despite riding with what looked like a broken wrist, followed by locals Kieran Hughes in second and Matt Grant in third. Awesome riding so thanks to all who entered.

John Bell also won the high jump, getting over the flock ewe and 6.5 boards.
Final event of the day was the ever popular, no rules, "death" race, round a taped off track over the humps round the suicide track. A series of heats saw thrills and spills galore with the top corner becoming ever more sketchy as a variety of liquids, wax, bananas, bottles and boards started to litter the track. Gav Barber won the final despite a sketchy semi when he took the tape and most of the cones with him.

The mascot, "Flock Ewe" came to grief in the end, loosing a leg after being pulled down the hill by bike, vids of the best bits to follow...

Thanks to everyone that came, especially the guys from NOTE and the Manchester crew who made a great effort to come down. We hoped you all enjoyed it. Lots of pics to follow....

West Park - Wally bar muppetry

Apparently some muppet in a road sweeper has managed to crash in to not one but both newly installed bars, and worse still the crash to the wally bar punctured the fuel tank covering the tarmac with red disel, which is now eating its way through the new tarmac - leaving great big holes. Nice work guys! ever heard of a brush?

West Park - Wall ride

Good work by Ralph and Pat building the wall ride on the ramp. Should be ready for spraying up at the jam by some top graf artists.

Weston Rec - Have your say on the plans!

At last, the long awaited plan for the Weston rec is up for public consultation. The good news is it could has some provision for wheeled sports, so maybe a BMX or jump track? a bowl or half pipe? its all open and up for debate!

If this is your local ride, take a good look, have a think about what youd like to see and then take the time to give some feedback to the project managers survey here. This will help both make sure that you get what you want and help in fundraising. So please take the time to fill it in.

There are also two open consultation events being held:
One on 27th June at Broken Cross Primary School Fete- from 10.30am, the second 26th July at the Fermain Youth Centre, on Beswick Road off Oxford Road - from 11am

West Park - tarmacing done!

First pictures of the expanded and upgraded West Park. Riders descibed it as flowy and awesome, basically lots of new lines and LOTS more space. There must have been 40 riders on it today and it still seemed like there was space. Expanded ramp and a couple of grind rails to come soon. Big Thanks to WREN for £15K funding and also big thanks to MBC for the rest. Great stuff.
Have you ridden it? then why not review it? add you comments below...
